Stone is something we naturally associate with permanence.
Hard. Solid. Immovable.
But look closely enough, and the landscape begins to tell a different story.
In Sculpted by Time III, the surface of the Bohus granite has taken on a remarkably organic character. Rounded depressions and flowing edges interrupt the rock, while small pools of water settle naturally into the forms created within it.
It was this contradiction that drew me to the composition.
The material is undeniably stone, yet many of its shapes feel almost fluid.
Warm sunlight falling across the granite helped reveal those forms. The characteristic reds and oranges became richer, while water and shadow created darker areas within the composition, giving the surface a greater sense of depth.
Rather than photographing the wider landscape, I wanted to isolate this small section and allow the shapes themselves to become the subject.
Without a horizon or familiar reference point, our perception of scale begins to disappear.
A depression in the rock becomes a valley.
A pool of water becomes a lake.
A curved edge begins to resemble a landscape viewed from far above.
That ambiguity is something I find particularly fascinating about the Sculpted by Time series. The closer we look at the landscape, the less literal it becomes.
And in this photograph, ancient stone begins to feel almost alive.
Sculpted by Time is a fine art photography collection created at Ramsvikslandet in Bohuslän, Sweden.
The collection explores the region's ancient Bohus granite through colour, light, texture and form. Rather than documenting the landscape in a traditional way, the photographs reveal curves, fractures, shadows and traces left by ice, water and weather.
Across eight individual artworks, the warm tones of the granite create a recurring visual language, often contrasted against water or the deep blue of the Scandinavian summer sky.
Each work is designed to stand on its own, while the collection can also be displayed in pairs or groups where forms, colours and textures continue from one artwork to another.
