The closer I looked, the more the landscape began to resemble a map.
Lines travel across the surface.
Small depressions interrupt them.
Dark hollows appear between areas illuminated by the warm sunlight.
Yet none of these marks were drawn.
Sculpted by Time VI is a closer study of the extraordinary surface of the Bohus granite at Ramsvikslandet.
Rather than looking toward the horizon, I pointed the camera directly into the landscape beneath me. What initially appeared to be a simple expanse of rock gradually revealed an intricate network of shapes, fractures and depressions.
The light was crucial.
Warm sunlight brought out the characteristic red and orange colors of the granite, while every hollow and irregularity created its own shadow. Together, they transformed the surface into something far more complex than I had first noticed.
There is almost a sense of language within it.
Lines become pathways.
Hollows become symbols.
The surface begins to resemble a map of an imaginary landscape seen from high above.
But what we are actually looking at is something much smaller — a fragment of ancient granite shaped and altered by forces acting over periods of time that are difficult for us to comprehend.
That change in perception is one of the things I find most fascinating about abstract photography.
Move closer, remove the familiar references, and an entirely new landscape can appear.
Sculpted by Time VI is my interpretation of one of those landscapes.

Sculpted by Time is a fine art photography collection created at Ramsvikslandet in Bohuslän, Sweden.
The collection explores the region's ancient Bohus granite through color, light, texture and form. Rather than documenting the landscape in a traditional way, the photographs reveal curves, fractures, shadows and traces left by ice, water and weather.
Across eight individual artworks, the warm tones of the granite create a recurring visual language, often contrasted against water or the deep blue of the Scandinavian summer sky.
Each work is designed to stand on its own, while the collection can also be displayed in pairs or groups where forms, colors and textures continue from one artwork to another.
